		<description>Hi there
Greg showed me your Blog and I feel the need to answer since I study that stuff and would like to discuss with someone who is not in the same networks as me.
I would take Putnam carefully his research particular in reference to his methods is quite controversial. There are a lot more issues I have with some of the American branches of this research but this is a whole other story.
I can recommend John Field (2003) Social Capital. Routledge. New York ... he refers to Coleman and Bourdieu the latter is seen as the founderfather of this approach. Further you can check out on http://www.aers.org.uk/aers/ this is the Applied Educational Research Scheme which is an institution situated in the UK trying to establish a theoretical allocation of SC. There are a lot of discussion papers for free download on this page. I thought it might be of interest for your teaching.
While I agree in general with your argumentation (in refernce to paintball) it is just episodic evidence and would not hold a scientific discussion.
This is the problem with some of the research in this area it is against common sense. And some of the dodgy methodology does not make it better :D The book of J. Field disucsses some weaknesses for that matter.
Good luck with teaching this stuff ... I still try to get my head around it ... FUN!
Cheers N</description>
